This is our most popular and least expensive way to make your way to Machu Picchu by the “Hidroelectrica” route which is the last stop before arriving at the town of “Aguas Calientes”.
You will get to enjoy amazing nature sightseeing as you will be a witness the change of climates from Andean to Rainforest.
This is perfect for the adventurous type as we will also be walking in flat land following the train tracks. You will get to see also the beautiful vegetation, different types of birds and wildlife in the area, depending on the season.

Itinerary
Our day starts off early by us picking you up at your accommodation lobby at approx. 6:45hrs on our tourist transportation. Our journey begins by driving you from Cusco to the only Inca living town of Ollantaytambo located in the Sacred Valley where we will stop for a minutes for last minute occurrences, then continue our way until the Malaga Pass at (4316 m.o.s.l /14160ft) This is the highest point of the trip, here´s where you will get to witness amazing landscapes changing colors and temperatures rather radically, an amazing transition from Andean highlands to Rainforest climate.
We will arrive at the small town of Santa Teresa where we will stop to enjoy our lunch, we continue our journey for an additional 1 hour to “Hidroelectrica” (Hydroelectric Plant). From there, you will walk on your own along the train tracks for approx.. 10KM about 2.5 hours over to “Aguas Calientes” (2040 masl /6692 ft.) (aka “Machu Picchu Pueblo”) which sits at the foot of the mountain where Machu Picchu stands and is the last stop where have overnight before the ancient to Machu Picchu Inca citadel.
When you reach “Aguas Calientes” Main Square, our guide will meet you there, you will able to spot him as he will be holding our a sign with your name(s) written on it, he will take you to your appropriate accommodation for a well-deserved rest after a long day. In the evening you will be taken by him to a restaurant for a light nutritious dinner and a small briefing for the next day activities. If you do not fancy the steep climb walking up to Machu Picchu the next day, you can buy a bus ticket for $12USD one way, (that bus ticket is not included).
Another early morning wake up at approx. 3:30hrs, breakfast will be supplied by the accommodation assigned shortly. At 4:30hrs you will start a walk from “Aguas Calientes” to the connecting bridge to be on your way to Machu Picchu in a rather steep walk uphill toward Machu Picchu´s main entrance which opens its doors at 6:00hrs. If you will take the bus, you will have to be at the bus station at 4:30 am, it is advisable to start queuing “early” as there are plenty of people waiting to catch the first bus to Machu Picchu (buses start running at 5:30 am).
Finally, when you reach Machu Picchu you will meet your guide at the pre-arranged spot. He will take you round the main parts of the complex while imparting ancient Inca history for 2hrs. approx. then leave you to wander around and discover Machu Picchu on your own until around 11:30hrs. in order to get back down to the foot of the mountain (a 45min walk) and back along the railway path to “Hidroelectrica” (Hydroelectric Plant) on your own because our transportation leaves to Cusco between 14:30 and 15:00hrs and arriving at the City of Cusco at 22:00hrs. approx.)
